Using CIRCLY with the Austroads Pavement Design Guide
The Austroads Pavement Structural Design Guide is the basis for road pavement design in Australia and New Zealand.
2008 Austroads Pavement Structural Design Guide Released
AGPT02/08 : Guide to Pavement Technology - Part 2: Pavement Structural Design was released in July 2008.
The main changes from the 2004 Guide [Pavement Design. A Guide to the Structural Design of Road Pavements (AP-G17/04)] are as follows:
- reformatted to form part of the comprehensive Guide to Pavement Technology series, including editorial review to address errors
- now includes design of lightly trafficked pavements previously published in Pavement Design for Light Traffic: A Supplement to Austroads Pavement Design Guide (AP-T36-06)
- includes procedures for evaluation of pavement damage due to specialised vehicles
- change of abbreviations for Standard Axles of loadings to SAR5, SAR7 and SAR12
- minor amendment to equation 6.7, speed adjustment for determining asphalt moduli
2008 Austroads Pavement Evaluation and Treatment Design Guide Released
AGPT05/08 : Guide to Pavement Technology - Part 5: Pavement Evaluation and Treatment Design was released in July 2008.
The main changes from the 2004 Guide [Pavement Rehabilitation - A Guide to the Design of Rehabilitation Treatments for Road Pavements (AP-G78/04)] are:
- reformatted to form part of the comprehensive Guide to Pavement Technology series
- extended to include lightly trafficked roads

Vicroads Code of Practice
Manual of codes of practice. RC 500.22. Selection and design of pavements and surfacings. December 2005.
This Code sets down VicRoads procedures for the selection and design of new road pavements and surfacing.
The Code includes important information on Selection of Asphalt Types and typical characteristics of asphalts commonly used by VicRoads.
You can download the Code at no charge from here.
Queensland Pavement Design Manual
The Pavement Design Manual sets out supplementary and specific requirements for the design of pavements for Main Roads. It includes Main Roads requirements for pavement types, reliability, subgrade assessment, climatic considerations, material characterisation, traffic, design and comparison of designs.
Further details here.
South Australia Pavement Design Supplement
Transport Services Division Pavement Design Supplement to the Austroads Guide to the Structural Design of Road Pavements.
The purpose of this Supplement is to provide more specific procedures and direction when using the Austroads methodology for the design of new pavements for the DTEI, Transport Services Division (TSD).

Overview of Mechanistic Pavement Design
We have recently published a paper that gives an overview of mechanistic pavement design and recent developments in CIRCLY 4. For further details see Wardle and Rodway (1998).
For more background on the Austroads design procedure, see the following report:
AP-T98/08 : Technical Basis of Austroads Guide to Pavement Technology - Part 2: Pavement Structural Design (Free download)
Important Warning- Heavy Duty Pavements
Performance data developed for highway pavements (e.g. Austroads) is not generally appropriate for heavy loadings such as airports and container terminals. Use of such models can lead to grossly under-designed pavements.
For further details see the Heavy Duty Industrial Pavement Design Guide.
